Once opened, it contains a pen that closely resembles Elijah's yellow duck pen (and Malkuth's in the Library, unbeknownst to Yesod). It's probably an unusual item here, given the technology available, but the recent conversation warranted a commemorative gesture, for Elijah's memory and Malkuth alike.

The District are large and all have their own cultures, Backstreet (the poorer side) and the Nests (the richer side) included. I was born in the latter, but... I wasn't richer than anyone else, and I led a completely ordinary life. It would put anyone to sleep to read about it!
The people in my Nest were all hardworking, desperate individuals. Even though Nests are supposed to be as colorful as downtown is here, that color wasn't meant for our eyes; all we needed was black and white, since that's all that mattered when it came to reading.
But despite that, I [ elijah ] tried to see color wherever I could, even if... it was just me fooling myself, or it was faded beyond belief.
Kinda funny to say when I ended up becoming someone who reads for a living, I guess! But the stories of the people in my City are colorful in their own way too.

I was a slow, clumsy student who worked twice as hard as anyone to keep up. I was frustrated with the people around me, and when I met a woman who seemed to hold all the color in the world I jumped at the chance to make a difference. From then on, I was part of a research team that aimed to free the people's minds, and it was fun. I made a lot of friends who saw things the way I did. I fell in love.
But nothing really remains that carefree in the City. It soured, and then it fell apart. I became part of a Wing (a corporation that acts as the economic and usually the main societal infrastructure of the District) and worked there for ten years, and then that fell apart horribly and I started working in the Library instead, with the same people I had since that research group. Or most of them, anyway.
You might think that we're close, buddy buddy sorts then, but it was only recently that we started like... actually hanging out and stuff again. Like before I woke up here and all.
